"Like Me" was Bobby Sessions' first official single for Def Jam, released April 10, 2018, ahead of its inclusion on RVLTN (Chapter 1): The Divided States of AmeriKKKa (EP, July 20, 2018). Produced by Dallas producer Sikwitit, the song traces present-day systemic inequality (incarceration, family separation, policing) back through the lineage of American slavery. Sessions' delivery escalates into a scream, and the track closes with three gunshots; he told NPR the yelling "represents the bottled up rage that many black people across the world feel every single day; being targeted and discriminated against because of skin color." He first performed it at SXSW 2018 as an anti-police-brutality song dedicated to his cousin James Harper. The song's thesis, that slavery's structures persist rather than end, is the archive's own framing of protest as lineage.
