In December 1969, Mark Clark, a 22 year old member of the Black Panther Party, was killed during the same police raid that resulted in the death of Fred Hampton in Chicago. Clark was present in the apartment as a security detail member when police entered the residence. According to later findings, Clark was shot and killed almost immediately after the raid began. Investigations determined that his shotgun discharged once as he fell, likely as a reflexive response after being shot, and that the overwhelming majority of gunfire came from police officers. Clark had joined the Black Panther Party as part of its efforts to provide community protection and political education. His killing received less public attention than Hampton’s at the time, but it remains an essential part of the historical record of the raid and its consequences. Mark Clark’s death underscores how law enforcement actions targeted not only prominent leaders but also rank and file members of Black political organizations. His killing, alongside Hampton’s, became central to later legal challenges, public inquiries, and ongoing debates about state violence, surveillance, and the suppression of political dissent.
