In December 1969, Fred Hampton, a 21 year old Black activist and chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, was killed during a predawn police raid on his apartment in Chicago. Hampton was asleep at the time of the raid and was shot multiple times by officers from the Chicago Police Department in coordination with Cook County authorities. Hampton had emerged as one of the most influential young leaders of the Black Panther Party, known for his political education work, community organizing, and efforts to build multiracial coalitions through what became known as the Rainbow Coalition. His leadership emphasized class solidarity, self determination, and resistance to systemic oppression. Subsequent investigations and court proceedings revealed that the raid was the result of extensive surveillance and infiltration by law enforcement, including the use of an FBI informant who provided a detailed floor plan of Hampton’s apartment. Evidence showed that police fired nearly all of the shots during the raid, while occupants of the apartment fired at most one defensive round. Fred Hampton’s killing was widely described by civil rights advocates as a political assassination. His death exposed the extent of coordinated state efforts to disrupt and eliminate Black radical leadership and became a defining example of government repression during the late Civil Rights and Black Power era.
