In October 1966, the Black Panther Party for Self Defense was founded in Oakland, California, by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. The organization emerged in response to persistent police violence, economic inequality, and the failure of existing institutions to protect Black communities. The Panthers advocated for armed self defense as a constitutional response to police brutality, organizing armed patrols to monitor police activity in Oakland. At the same time, the party articulated a broader political vision through its Ten Point Program, which demanded full employment, housing, education, exemption from military service, and an end to police violence against Black people. Beyond its public image, the Black Panther Party developed extensive community survival programs, including free breakfast programs for children, health clinics, clothing drives, and political education initiatives. These programs addressed immediate material needs while building collective power and consciousness within Black communities. The rise of the Black Panther Party drew intense scrutiny and repression from local and federal authorities. Through surveillance, arrests, and targeted disruption, law enforcement agencies sought to weaken the organization, viewing it as a threat to established power structures. Despite this repression, the Panthers had a lasting influence on political organizing, cultural expression, and global liberation movements. The founding of the Black Panther Party marked a significant shift in the Black freedom struggle. It expanded the definition of protest beyond legal reform and nonviolence, asserting self determination, community control, and resistance as central components of the fight for Black liberation.
