In September 1963, Cynthia Wesley, a 14 year old Black girl, was killed in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Cynthia was inside the church basement, changing into her choir robe, when the bomb detonated. Cynthia was known as a quiet and thoughtful child who loved school and music. The church had served as a central meeting place for civil rights activity, making it a frequent target of white supremacist violence. Cynthia Wesley’s death underscored the indiscriminate nature of racial terror during the Civil Rights Movement. Her killing helped galvanize national support for civil rights legislation by exposing how extremist violence targeted even the youngest members of Black communities.
