In September 1963, Carole Robertson, a 14 year old Black girl, was killed when a bomb exploded at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. She was preparing for church services with friends when the explosion tore through the building. Carole was a student who enjoyed reading and planned to become a teacher. The bombing occurred amid sustained white supremacist opposition to desegregation and civil rights activism in Birmingham. Her death became part of a national reckoning over racial violence and domestic terrorism. Carole Robertson’s killing remains a powerful reminder of how children were placed directly in the path of political hatred and resistance to racial equality.
