In September 1963, Carol Denise McNair, an 11 year old Black girl, was killed in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. She had arrived early for Sunday services and was in the basement when the bomb exploded. Carol Denise was the youngest of the four girls killed. According to family accounts, she had excitedly shown her mother the dress she planned to wear that morning. Her death deeply resonated with the public due to her age and the innocence of the moment in which she was killed. Carol Denise McNair’s killing became one of the most haunting symbols of racial terror during the Civil Rights era.
